About Us
Life in the 21st Century
21st Century Newspapers, Inc. is a company of strength, vision,
and determination. We have built our company around some of the finest
newspapers anywhere, and we are continuously working to improve our products so
that they serve our readers and our advertisers better than any of our
competitors. We are looking to the future with great expectations and we are
determined to be the very best. Period.
21st Century Newspapers, Inc. came to life on August 21, 1997,
when we purchased our first daily newspapers –The Oakland Press, The Macomb
Daily, The Royal Oak Tribune, and a variety of weeklies in Michigan’s Thumb
Area.
On March 22, 2002 we added the valuable Heritage Newspaper group to our
cluster. The Heritage group is a collection of 10 weekly newspapers, two
monthlies, and several niche publications. Included in the group is the
bi-weekly News-Herald –winner of the Michigan Press Association’s "Best
Newspaper of the Year" honor for every year since 1990. Heritage’s circulation
covers three counties, and runs from Dearborn, Michigan, to the Ohio border.
Later in 2002, on August 26, we acquired the Morning Star Publishing Group,
along with its daily Morning Sun. The group is a cluster of 21 shoppers, two
real estate guides, and one daily newspaper. Located in Mt. Pleasant, the
Morning Star group has given us a strong foothold in Central and Northern
Michigan.
Six short years after our first acquisitions, we have one of the largest
unduplicated footprints in the country. We now have more than 100 publications,
which cumulatively serve some 2500 square miles, with virtually no overlap of
circulation or distribution. Our papers cover 70 percent of Michigan’s counties,
and our primary marketplace, Oakland and Macomb counties, is one of the
wealthiest and fastest growing areas in the nation.
We publish a variety of newspapers, shoppers, and specialty publications such
as real estate and automotive guides. Our newspapers include monthlies,
weeklies, and four dailies, and have a combined circulation of over 1.7 million.
All of our publications exhibit a firm commitment to providing the best local,
national, and international coverage. In fact, last year, three of our four
dailies won Newspaper of the Year awards.
For advertisers, we represent one of the "best buys" in the nation. The
Greater Detroit Newspaper Network (GDNN) handles all of our advertising sales.
GDNN is comprised of some of the most knowledgeable research analysts and sales
people anywhere. The professionals at GDNN can sell our entire footprint, or any
piece of it, right down to zip code levels. Best of all, it is done with one
order, one rate, and one bill. Orders can even be placed on-line. With such a
strong primary market place, and such an experienced staff, it’s easy to see why
many of the nation’s biggest companies come to us for advertising penetration.
To further enhance our efficiency, our creative management team has developed
a system of moving information, such as advertising pages, stories, and
financial data, electronically from publisher to publisher. In addition, we have
created press time openings to allow us to print all of our publications on any
of our various presses. We print at five separate locations using Goss
Community, Goss Metro-Liner, and Goss Cosmo Presses.
The secret to the success of 21st Century Newspapers, Inc. is,
without a doubt, our people. We are a company comprised of more then 1,600
dedicated, caring, and experienced employees. Our executive committee alone
represents a cumulative total of 300 years of experience –nearly 30 years
apiece. Our corporate staff is comprised of acknowledged industry experts,
committed to growth and dedicated to providing the very best to all our
stakeholders –employees, shareholders, readers, and advertisers. The commitment
to quality and passion for ink on paper business does not stop there. It can be
found throughout 21st Century Newspapers, at all levels of the
company. We work to hire and retain the very best, and in that respect, we have
succeeded greatly.
We are looking to the future with great expectations for all aspects of our
business. With the creation of 21st Century University, a training
program to develop employee and management potential, we are developing leaders
for the future, and building bench strength to back them up. We are investing
heavily in our people and in technology to keep 21st Century
Newspapers, Inc. ahead of the pack. Our experienced management is constantly
looking for new, creative ways to grow, and as the newspaper industry changes,
we will be there to offer the very best.
Life in the 21st Century couldn’t be better.
