Journal Register Company (NYSE: JRC) - announced today that it has completed the acquisition of 21st Century Newspapers, Inc., a privately-held operator of one of the largest newspaper clusters in the United States
TRENTON, NJ, August 13, 2004

The acquisition increases Journal Register Company's holdings to 27 daily newspapers, with combined daily circulation of approximately 650,000 and Sunday circulation of approximately 675,000, and 327 non-daily publications, with combined non-daily distribution of over 5 million. The Michigan newspaper group is the largest and most comprehensive newspaper cluster, and one of the largest in the United States. The Michigan based daily, weekly and shopper company distribute some 2.3 million copies each week and 63 percent of the counties in lower Michigan. The Readership extends from Lake Erie to the Straits of Mackinac and the Lower Peninsula’s counties. 

The acquisition includes four daily newspapers (The Daily Oakland Press, The Macomb Daily, The Daily Tribune in Royal Oak, and The Morning Sun in Mount Pleasant) with combined average daily net paid circulation of approximately 137,500 and combined average Sunday net paid circulation of approximately 176,000.
